Interpreter Position at the Sacramento Superior Court

Position Overview

Under general supervision, the Court Interpreter performs a wide variety of language interpretation activities for the Superior Courts of California and involved parties, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, court personnel, and the public. The role involves both court and related services interpretation, requiring accuracy and impartiality.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This role involves consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and related services. Additionally, the interpreter may perform sight translation (orally interpreting written documents) as needed.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interpret from and into English and the applicable non-English language during court proceedings and related services.
  • Perform sight translation of documents such as court petitions, reports, waivers, plea forms, and letters.
  • Interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, and the public upon court direction.
  • Notify the court of potential issues affecting interpretation performance.
  • Research and understand specialized terminology used in legal, technological, scientific, and medical contexts.
  • Review daily court dockets, receive assignments, and accurately complete activity logs or documentation.
  • Perform services at various court locations and be cross-assigned when necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support court functions.

Qualifications & Certifications

Required: Possession of a valid Certified Court Interpreter certificate issued by the Judicial Council of California.

Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of

  • English grammar and vocabulary in both English and the non-English language.
  • Interpretation techniques: simultaneous, consecutive, sight translation.
  • Legal concepts and forensic terminology.
  • Regional and cultural variations in relevant languages.
  • Interpreter ethics and standards as per California Rules of Court, Rule 2.890.

Abilities

  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Interpret accurately and impartially, including in adversarial or emotionally charged situations.
  • Use office and interpretation equipment proficiently.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to court policies and procedures.
  • Establish effective working relationships with colleagues and court personnel.
  • Conduct ongoing research on terminology and language variations.
  • Follow written and oral instructions diligently.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent, or alternative transportation methods.
