Job Summary
Position Definition:
Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities for the Placer Superior Court, including interactions with witnesses, defendants, attorneys, court personnel, and the public. Responsibilities include both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, sight translation, and other related services as needed.
Distinguishing Characteristics
- This is a single-level classification.
- Perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and public interactions.
- Conduct sight translations of written court documents and read aloud translations as required.
Judgment and Responsibility
As subject matter experts, interpreters possess specialized knowledge, skills, and experience, often exercising independent judgment. They report to a Unit Manager, with assignments typically coordinated by the Interpreter Coordinator or Unit Manager.
Essential Functions
- Interpret from and into English and a non-English language using simultaneous and consecutive modes during court proceedings and related activities.
- Perform sight translations of legal documents such as petitions, reports, waivers, and disposition statements.
- Provide interpretation services for judges, attorneys, court staff, litigants, and the public at the court's direction.
- Notify the court of any issues that may impact interpretation performance.
- Research terminology related to legal, scientific, technological, or medical fields used within the court environment.
- Manage daily assignments received from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator, maintaining accurate logs and documentation.
- Facilitate communication between court staff and non-English speaking individuals regarding court procedures and information.
- Perform services at various court locations and may be cross-assigned to other courts as needed.
- Carry out other interpretation duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge Of:
- Correct grammar and vocabulary in English and the applicable non-English language, assuming proper usage by source speakers.
- Legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages.
- Regional dialects and language variations.
- Interpreter ethics and standards, in accordance with California Rules of Court.
Ability To:
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Accurately interpret in various modes without editing or omission.
- Follow policies, procedures, and instructions effectively.
- Maintain confidentiality of court records and documents.
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships.
- Adhere to legal statutes, court rules, and personnel policies.
- Interpret impartially, even in emotionally charged situations.
- Conduct ongoing research to stay current with terminology and language usage.
- Utilize office equipment including computers, phones, and copiers.
- Operate court-provided transmitter and receiver equipment.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Certificate as a "Certified/Registered Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California.
Working Conditions & Additional Information
- Most work is performed indoors in a controlled office environment.
- Work is typically conducted in a standard court setting with open cubicles and offices.
- May work alone or in support of others; moderate noise levels are common.
- Travel to various court locations may be required, and cross-assignment to other courts throughout California is possible.
- Individuals may encounter emotional, upset, or angry persons and sensitive or disturbing evidence/testimony.
- Overtime may occasionally be necessary.
