The LHD Application Unit plays a vital role in managing eligibility reviews and rentals for Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) applicants, ensuring compliance with HUD Regulations and NYCHA policies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with applicants, landlords, and various internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities 🤝
Reporting to the Manager of the Correspondence Unit, the Housing Assistant will:
- Interview applicants and determine eligibility.
- Resolve applicant-related issues.
- Respond to information requests and correspondences accurately and promptly.
- Gather and evaluate information to resolve complaints.
- Conduct background checks including sex offender, criminal history, and other verifications.
- Complete VASH, Project Based, and RAD Project Based Lease Up processes.
- Communicate with tenants, landlords, and outside agencies to expedite applications.
- Establish effective relationships with internal and external customers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Special Requirements 🚨
- Fluency in Spanish: Candidates must pass a Spanish proficiency test.
- Provisional appointment: May be made under NYS Civil Service Law 65; position does not confer tenure or permanence.

- This position is available for NYCHA employees via lateral transfer or promotion. Employees must have served at least one year at their current location, title, and level.

Minimum Qualifications 🎓
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or
- Associate degree or 60 semester credits with one year of housing management experience in developments containing at least 150 units, or
- High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of relevant full-time experience, or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience, with college credits substituting for experience at a rate of 30 credits per year.
Foreign Language Requirement 🌐
Proficiency in a foreign language relevant to NYC Housing Authority requirements. Demonstrated through an oral test.
Preferred Skills 🌟
- Knowledge of the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Program and related policies.
- Understanding of HUD rules and regulations.
- Intermediate Excel skills and familiarity with online databases.
- Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills.
