Position: Staff Nurse in High Intensity Care Unit (HICU) ๐ก๏ธ
Overview of the HICU ๐ฅ
The High Intensity Care Unit (HICU) features 20 semi-private rooms capable of accommodating up to 40 patients. The unit specializes in:
- Ventilation and pulmonary care
- Acute rehabilitation
Our multidisciplinary team provides care for patients with:
- Acute brain injuries
- Respiratory assistance and monitoring
- Rehabilitation needs
Staff members are outgoing, positive, and utilize strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient needs, implement clinical interventions, and develop comprehensive care plans aimed at improving outcomes. The unit accepts patients aged 18 and older.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe, age-appropriate patient care, serving as an advisor, resource, and leader within the team
- Demonstrate clinical expertise across all levels of the clinical ladder (RN I, RN II, RN III)
- Ensure standards of care are met through the nursing process
- Assist in coordinating unit operations and workflows
- Mentor staff, role model professional policies, procedures, and standards
- Develop and implement patient teaching plans
- Identify educational opportunities in collaboration with the Education Resource Center
- Maintain optimal patient throughput aligning with best practices for admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Manage human and material resources effectively
- Hold staff accountable and encourage participation in decision making and unit goal setting
Leadership & Supervision ๐
- Monitor compliance and evaluate care delivery through patient rounds, chart reviews, and outcome indicators in accordance with TJC standards
- Facilitate daily huddles focused on unit and staff issues, as well as organizational updates
- Respond to patient and team inquiries, providing clear and compassionate communication
- Assess staffing needs based on patient acuity; collaborate for resource reallocation
- Participate in performance appraisals, utilizing objective criteria such as chart audits and peer evaluations
- Match patient demands with available resources, maintaining unit functions
- Educate staff on resource allocation and monitor performance against financial and operational targets
- Create a supportive environment by fostering emotional, psychological, and spiritual support for patients and families
- Promote effective communication and collaboration across healthcare teams
Qualifications & Certifications โ
- Maryland Registered Nurse License
- ACLS certification (applicable to telemetry care)
