🔍 Job Overview
The selected candidate will support DOJ with a broad range of Linguistic Support Services (LSS), translating written documents, media content, and providing interpretation—both court and deposition. Materials span diverse fields such as legal, medical, scientific, financial, military, and technological sectors, often containing complex terminology. All projects involve highly sensitive information, requiring strict confidentiality at all times.
📝 Key Responsibilities
- Translate documents, media files (.wav, audio, video, compact discs), and electronic content.
- Provide interpretation services during court proceedings and depositions.
- Transcribe audio/video content accurately into written format.
- Handle materials ranging from highly technical reports to informal texts and messages.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to strict data security measures.
🎯 Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in the required language within the past 10 years, with excellent English and editing skills.
- Language Skills: ILR Level 4 or equivalent on language/translation tests.
- Residency: Lived in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years (not necessarily consecutive).
- Legal Experience: At least 1 year working with law enforcement or legal departments.
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.
- Vocabulary & Knowledge: Proficient in formal, diplomatic, and casual communication modes; familiar with slang, regionalisms, and specialized terminology.
- Research Skills: Able to use translation resources, monolingual references, and online materials to ensure accurate terminology.
- Language Fluency: Native or fluent in your language, with professional command of English (if applicable).
- Translation Quality: Committed to accurate, faithful translations that preserve tone and intent.
- Ethics & Confidentiality: Adhere to stringent linguist ethics and confidentiality protocols.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.
🛡️ Clearances & Locations
Candidates must hold an Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
The role offers flexibility with remote work, with options including the National Capitol Region and various CONUS locations. Some travel may be required.
