About the Role
The Unconventional seeks a highly skilled Language Instructor to support the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). DLIFLC is dedicated to cultivating understanding of foreign languages and cultures, vital for national security. As a Language Instructor, you will deliver engaging classroom and virtual language instruction at the Defense Language Institute - Washington (DLI-W), preparing service members for critical roles worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver professional language instruction to students in both classroom and virtual settings, with course durations from ten weeks or longer, often spanning six hours or more per day.
- Customize lesson plans to meet individual student needs, utilizing proficiency-oriented, culturally-based, and learner-centered methodologies.
- Employ authentic materials and real-world tasks that simulate practical use of language skills in final job assignments, emphasizing communication competence, military terminology, and colloquial/informal speech.
- Adapt instruction across all proficiency levels—from beginner to advanced—fostering spontaneous language use and advancing proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- Teach writing skills to support overall language acquisition, with practical applications and goal-oriented methods like CLT and TBLT.
- Develop reading and listening comprehension through diverse authentic materials and strategic activities, enabling students to meet proficiency objectives.
- Bridge global to job-specific skills such as handwriting, keyboarding, professional writing, and correspondence.
- Engage higher order thinking and promote independent learning, integrating diverse instructional technologies like e-flashcards, apps, VR, social tools, and Gen AI.
- Incorporate intercultural competence by embedding cultural knowledge—behavior, systems, geography, and social context—into all phases of training.
- Follow a diagnostically oriented, learner-centered, and content-based approach using authentic materials, scenario-based tasks, and immersive environments.
Curriculum & Materials
- Sufficient exposure to listening and reading authentic target language texts
- Integration of speaking and writing activities
- Application of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
- Reinforcement of vocabulary, discourse, pragmatics, and sociocultural awareness
- Inclusion of ancillary objectives such as stylistic tone, register, politeness, slang, and colloquialisms
- All courses to include a comprehensive syllabus outlining objectives and materials
Qualifications & Requirements
- Educational background: Bachelor's degree or equivalent with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant, intensive adult language teaching experience focused on ILR skill levels 2 and 3; or four (4) years of successful language teaching experience in lieu of education.
- Language proficiency: Native or near-native speaker of the target language with Level 3 or higher in ILR or Superior or higher in ACTFL; proficient in English with Level 2 or above in ILR or Advanced or higher in ACTFL. Documentation of proficiency scores (not older than 18 months) is required.
- Experience with educational technology and remote instruction is preferred.
- Ability to adapt to diverse learning styles and employ varied teaching strategies.
- Clear background check required.
