Position Overview

We are currently recruiting for a language instructor to join the School of Language Studies at the Department of State's Foreign Language Institute (FSI). The role involves providing language training, mentoring, and testing for multiple languages, contributing to our mission of fostering linguistic and cultural understanding.

Primary Duties

  • Plan and conduct group language classes in small onsite settings in Arlington, VA.
  • Utilize established materials and collaborate with the Language Training Specialist (LTS) and fellow instructors on training and testing.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback; adapt teaching methods to meet individual needs.
  • Perform informal and formal assessments to monitor and evaluate student advancement.
  • Maintain a respectful, student-centered environment that encourages learning and development.
  • Manage online classrooms through the Foreign Service Institute’s Learning Management System.
  • Participate in approved non-classroom activities within the Washington DC area as needed.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Native or near-native proficiency in the target language (preferably Level 4 or higher on ILR scale). 🗣️
  • Strong cultural background of the country or region, gained through upbringing, education, or residence in a heritage community.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate, or foreign equivalent degree in any field.
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience to adult learners (minimum 2 students).
  • Minimum 3 years of proficiency-based or task-based curriculum teaching experience.
  • At least 1 year of administering proficiency assessments (e.g., DLPT, OPI, or similar exams).
  • Basic computer skills: email, Microsoft Office Suite, online meeting tools (Zoom, Skype, MS Teams, WebEx).
  • Experience with hybrid (in-person and online) teaching formats.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing language curricula or instructional materials.
  • Proficiency in using the communicative approach and integrating educational technologies.
  • Experience delivering training tailored for diplomatic communities.
