Make a meaningful difference in families' lives by supporting and connecting them to vital resources through our comprehensive Family Resource Center.

Role Overview

Under the supervision of the Lead FSS, the Family Support Specialist will oversee daily activities at a Family Resource Center (FRC), connecting families with support, resources, and community. This position will support multiple campuses as needed.

Primary Functions

Essential Responsibilities 🤝

  • Foster a learner-centered environment that promotes physical/emotional safety.
  • Build positive relationships with staff, families, and peers.
  • Respect and incorporate cultural diversity, recognizing families' strengths and individuality across ethnicity, race, spirituality, socio-economic status, language, gender, and geography.
  • Design, plan, and deliver services aligned with agency and funder standards, including standards like Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards and Family Engagement Frameworks.
  • Stay informed about legislation, funding parameters, and field developments impacting services to children with special needs.
  • Implement referral, intake, enrollment, and orientation processes with families.
  • Assist families in accessing community resources through information, advocacy, and case management.
  • Provide short-term interventions with appropriate follow-up and documentation.
  • Use family-centered practices to develop asset-based assessments and care plans, supporting family goals and strengths.
  • Enhance family capacity to support growth of all members—adults, youth, and children.
  • Collaborate to develop and coordinate a menu of family support services tailored to community needs.
  • Plan and facilitate group services like parent education, peer support, leadership, and parent/child activities. Some activities may require certification.
  • Promote family involvement, leadership, and peer support activities.
  • Assist in community and family event planning and production.
  • Procure materials and supplies efficiently, managing program resources.
  • Maintain welcoming parent areas, updating information and resources regularly.
  • Provide office support such as phone coverage, mail processing, and inventory control.
  • Participate in late afternoon, evening, or weekend activities as needed.

Family Support Integration 🤝

  • Align with agency-wide family support goals, leveraging partner strengths.
  • Share ownership of integration efforts and participate in planning meetings.
  • Link families to services via outreach, referrals, and assessments.
  • Participate in case consultations for coordinated care.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team, sharing information and supporting implementation.

Reporting & Documentation 📝

  • Accurately collect, enter, and report program and client data on time.
  • Maintain confidentiality for all child and family records, organizing physical and electronic files.
  • Prepare expense reports and invoices for supervisor review.
  • Support evaluation data collection and performance management processes.

Community Engagement 🌍

  • Conduct outreach to recruit families and ensure targeted enrollment.
  • Utilize canvassing, mailing, presentations, and community events to outreach effectively.
  • Document outreach activities and follow-up with families.
  • Form partnerships and act as a liaison to promote services, recruit volunteers, and coordinate referrals.
  • Engage actively in the community and advocate for fair, responsive service systems.

Customer Service & Safety 💬🦺

  • Provide exceptional, professional customer service to families and community members.
  • Represent the organization with professionalism at all times.
  • Prioritize personal safety, use PPE, and report safety concerns promptly.

Teamwork & Professional Development 🤝🎯

  • Interact positively with team members and facilitate positive change.
  • Participate in supervision, coaching, meetings, and trainings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and reflect on practices to improve service delivery.

Position Qualifications & Requirements 📋

  • Education: AS Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or related, with ongoing college coursework towards a BA, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years working with high-risk families in community settings.
  • Language: English required; Spanish preferred.
  • Clearances: DOJ Fingerprinting, Child Abuse Index, TB and immunizations, CPR & First Aid, Physical Health Screening.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage stress tactfully in multicultural settings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet applications.
  • Competence in decision-making, equipment use, and maintaining confidentiality.

Physical Demands & Work Environment 🏃‍♀️🖥️

  • Primarily sitting (80%), with walking and standing (10% each).
  • Frequent use of hands for typing and handling objects.
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Visual abilities include close, distance, and peripheral vision, with focus adjustments.

  • Pay: $27.00 - $28.00 per hour
