Exciting Opportunity: Bilingual Literacy Specialist at Maryland School for the Deaf

Join our diverse, bilingual community dedicated to providing an equitable, nurturing, and engaging education for Deaf students from birth to 21 years old. We are seeking committed individuals to support language development, literacy, and dual-culture integration at our Columbia Campus.

Main Purpose of the Job

Support students and staff at the Columbia Campus by implementing a bilingual educational program in American Sign Language (ASL) and printed English. Foster an enriched bicultural environment to promote social-emotional growth, focusing on language and literacy interventions for students from birth to 21. Assist classroom teachers through team teaching, coaching, professional development, and best practices aligned with College- and Career-Ready Standards in bilingual education.

🔧 Position Duties

  • Implement IEP reading and language services for elementary and middle school students
  • Promote balanced literacy and conduct initial assessments to determine student eligibility
  • Coordinate and provide literacy services to individuals and groups, enhancing ASL, reading, and writing skills
  • Support teachers with literacy strategies, modeling lessons, coaching, and professional development
  • Maintain Bilingual Education principles school-wide
  • Participate in staff development activities for professional growth
  • Monitor literacy assessments to track student progress

This role involves collaboration with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as specialists in English Language Arts, Social Studies, ASL, Reading, Bilingual Education, Student Affairs, and campus leadership.

🎓 Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with post-baccalaureate graduate credits in reading education or bilingual pedagogy
  • Eligibility or willingness to obtain Maryland State Department of Education certification as a Reading Specialist
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and written English
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf Education, and ability to serve students across diverse educational and language backgrounds
  • Experience with reading assessments and diagnostics
  • Minimum of three years successful classroom literacy instruction

✨ Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education of the Deaf, Reading, or equivalent graduate credits
  • At least five years of teaching experience and familiarity with the Deaf community and ARC Core framework
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development
  • Certification as a reading specialist or equivalent
  • Thorough knowledge of bilingual pedagogy

🛡️ Special Requirements

Candidates must pass a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568). Additionally, applicants should provide three letters of recommendation.
