🌍 Location of the Position

  • Frederick Campus: 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705

Main Purpose of the Job

This role supports students and staff across both campuses to develop and implement a bilingual educational program in a language-accessible environment. The position aims to foster an enriched bicultural setting that promotes social and emotional development for Deaf students from birth through age 21.

Key responsibilities include utilizing American Sign Language (ASL), printed words, and visual supports to address students’ varied needs, supporting intervention programming, and ensuring equitable practices throughout the classroom and curriculum systems.

This is an 11-month position.

📝 Position Duties

  • Maintain adherence to Bilingual Education concepts and principles school-wide.
  • Oversee the ASL/English Framework Action Plan.
  • Lead the selection and review of bilingual curriculum materials, ensuring diversity and equity.
  • Develop and enhance instructional and curricular resources for K-12 programs.
  • Review curricula for bias and diversity, implementing improvements as needed.
  • Create professional development plans focused on bilingual pedagogy and ASL standards.
  • Monitor implementation of ASL K-12 Standards and provide feedback to teachers.
  • Support instruction using ASL and English, including new teacher induction and struggling teachers.
  • Coordinate the ASL Immersion Program for students beginning to acquire ASL skills.
  • Implement ASL services for eligible students via IEPs and maintain the ASL Resource Center.
  • Monitor ASL assessments in collaboration with the Director of Academic Affairs.
  • Participate in staff development and professional growth activities.
  • Collaborate with curriculum and instruction leaders to produce content for staff, students, and families.
  • Communicate bilingual pedagogy and curricular updates clearly to all stakeholders.

🎓 Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with post-baccalaureate credits in bilingual pedagogy.
  • Eligibility or willingness to obtain Maryland State Department of Education certification.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and written English.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf Education.
  • At least five years of successful bilingual classroom instruction.

✨ Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of teaching experience and familiarity with assessment tools.
  • Deep knowledge of bilingual pedagogy.
  • Experience designing professional development and mentoring teachers.
  • Understanding of the Deaf community and assessment/diagnostic tools.

🔒 Special Requirements

  • Applicants must undergo a criminal background check at their own expense.
  • Provide three letters of recommendation.
