We are seeking qualified candidates for the position of District Translator, a vital role ensuring effective communication across our district in English and Spanish. This is a full-time position with a one-year eligibility list, with the potential for future vacancies.

Position Details

  • Title: District Translator
  • Hours: 8 hours/day
  • Term: 12 months
  • Validity of Eligibility List: One year, applicable for filling future vacancies during this period

Note: Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish to qualify for this classification.

Summary of Duties 📋

Under the supervision of the Superintendent or designated administrator, the District Translator:

  • Translates and interprets a wide variety of complex written and spoken communications district-wide, including sensitive materials with high stakes for error.
  • Facilitates communication between district staff and non-English speaking students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Performs clerical functions such as typing documents, letters, memoranda, and providing information to the public.

This role involves detailed translation tasks, interpreting during meetings or events, and supporting various district activities. Please review the "Employment Standards" section to ensure you meet all requirements before applying.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate complex documents, including policies, bulletins, complaints, forms, I.E.P.s, instructional materials, and official correspondence, accurately.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, hearings, and other events to provide consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation services.
  • Interpret technical terminology used by psychologists, speech therapists, nurses, lawyers, and other district professionals.
  • Proofread and ensure the accuracy of translated documents.
  • Communicate with district administrators, faculty, and staff to support interpretation needs.
  • Evaluate and score bilingual assessment exams for classified staff.
  • Assist in administering tests to non-English speaking students to ensure precise results.
  • Develop or revise forms and communications in the designated second language.
  • Support clerical tasks, including record-keeping, report generation, and document management.
  • Greet staff and the public bilingually, providing information and directing inquiries.

Additional Duties

  • May accompany district personnel on field trips or school activities to interpret and assist with communication.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements 🎓

Education

High school diploma or equivalent. Additional training or college coursework in interpretation and translation or proficiency in the designated second language is preferred.

Experience

  • Option 1: Two years of full-time experience translating and interpreting bilingual materials and providing interpretation during meetings.
  • Option 2: Three years in a position requiring bilingual competency in the second language.

A Bachelor's degree or Certification in Translation and Interpretation may substitute for one year of experience.

Special Requirements

  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain district insurance coverage.
  • All licenses and certificates must be current at employment and maintained throughout service.

Additional Information

This recruitment uses a Dual Certification process. Candidates passing all examination parts will be ranked accordingly, considering promotional credits for current employees.

Examinations are open to both permanent employees and the public.
