Galápagos Conservancy is seeking an experienced, bilingual (English & Spanish) Director of Communications to craft compelling narratives, elevate our global voice, and inspire conservation efforts worldwide. This full-time, remote role offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with our Ecuador-based team, with occasional travel.

Position Overview
As our Director of Communications, you'll lead the development and execution of an integrated strategy that amplifies Galápagos Conservancy's voice, enhances our brand, and maximizes our conservation impact. Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, you will ensure our messaging aligns with fundraising, science, partnerships, and organizational goals.
This role requires a strategic storyteller and hands-on leader capable of translating complex conservation science into engaging stories for donors, media, partners, and the public. You will oversee all communications, including media relations, digital content, web presence, brand stewardship, thought leadership, and field storytelling, managing a dedicated team and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities
🔑 Strategic Communications Leadership
- Develop and lead an organization-wide communications strategy to boost visibility, trust, and engagement, supporting fundraising and partnerships.
- Advise senior leadership on messaging for major announcements, scientific milestones, and organizational initiatives.
- Ensure consistent, compelling storytelling across all channels and materials.
📰 Media Relations & Public Visibility
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists covering conservation, biodiversity, climate, Latin America, philanthropy, and science.
- Proactively pitch stories, coordinate interviews, and secure impactful media coverage.
- Create press releases, media kits, fact sheets, and talking points for staff and partners.
- Manage crisis communications and track media analytics and trends.
🎨 Brand Leadership & Narrative Development
- Steward and evolve Galápagos Conservancy’s brand identity with the Marketing and Direct Response team.
- Maintain messaging frameworks, voice and tone guidelines, and visual standards.
- Oversee design assets, photography, and video content to ensure alignment with organizational values.
- Lead content creation for philanthropy efforts, including annual reports and bi-annual magazines.
💻 Digital Communications & Web Content
- Oversee website strategy, content accuracy, engagement, and SEO optimization.
- Manage the Webmaster, guiding site updates and improvements.
- Coordinate with the team on email campaigns, newsletters, impact updates, and donor materials.
- Use analytics to inform strategy and enhance performance.
🎙️ Thought Leadership & Executive Visibility
- Identify opportunities for leadership visibility at conferences and events.
- Draft speeches, op-eds, presentations, and content to position Galápagos Conservancy as a global conservation voice.
- Lead communications around major milestones and donor events.
📸 Storytelling from the Field
- Collaborate with Ecuador-based teams to capture impactful stories through photography, video, and scientific data.
- Supervise multimedia content to ethically and accurately showcase wildlife, landscapes, and communities.
- Translate scientific achievements into inspiring narratives for diverse audiences.
🤝 Internal Communications & Cross-Team Collaboration
- Partner with the Philanthropy team for donor-focused content and campaigns.
- Support program and science staff in translating complex content for public audiences.
- Coordinate with Operations and leadership to ensure consistent organizational messaging.
🧩 Team Leadership, Vendors & Budget Management
- Lead and support a small communications team, including a multimedia producer and webmaster.
- Manage external agencies, designers, translators, and consultants.
- Cultivate a collaborative, creative, and impactful communications culture.
- Oversee budgets related to media, content production, and branding initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years in communications, covering strategy, media relations, digital content, branding, and storytelling.
- Proven success in securing press coverage and managing journalist relationships.
- Exceptional bilingual (English & Spanish) writing and editing skills.
- Experience in developing and executing multi-channel communication strategies.
- Proficiency in managing small teams and external vendors.
- Strong project management skills with ability to juggle multiple priorities.
- Ability to translate scientific or technical information into accessible narratives.
- Knowledge of conservation, biodiversity, or environmental issues preferred.
- Cultural competency and experience working across U.S. and Ecuador teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel 1-3 times annually, including to the Galápagos.
Benefits & Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000, depending on experience and scope of responsibility. Galápagos Conservancy offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
