Job Overview

The Director for Global Defense - Japan is responsible for spearheading the growth and management of strategic defense and national security business activities within Japan. This role ensures alignment with global defense priorities while navigating Japan’s unique regulatory, security, and procurement landscapes. You will cultivate executive relationships with Japan’s Ministry of Defense and key partners, shape long-term capture strategies, and oversee the secure delivery of mission-critical outcomes. Reporting to global defense leadership, this position works closely with Japan country teams, product/engineering units, legal, security, and delivery teams.

📝 Key Responsibilities

• Strategy Development: Define and execute Japan defense growth strategies aligned with global objectives and market dynamics 🇯🇵.
• Mission & Stakeholder Engagement: Identify priority missions, agencies, modernization programs, and establish value propositions emphasizing resilience, sovereignty, and security ⭐.
• Relationship Management: Build and maintain senior-level relationships with the Japan Ministry of Defense, Self-Defense Forces, government entities, and defense primes 🤝.
• Solution Design & Compliance: Collaborate with architects and delivery teams to develop secure, compliant solutions (cloud, AI, cyber, data platforms).
• Proposal & Delivery Oversight: Ensure proposals and plans meet customer needs, sovereignty expectations, and accreditation pathways 📄.
• Leadership & Negotiation: Lead executive presentations and negotiations with key stakeholders.
• Partnership Building: Establish strategic alliances with Japanese defense primes, system integrators, and tech partners 🔗.
• Team & Contracting Structure: Design teaming models that fulfill procurement and security requirements.
• Cross-Functional Coordination: Work closely with legal, security, and compliance teams on bid decisions and contracting 🔍.
• Global Collaboration: Influence global teams to prioritize Japan-specific defense needs and schedules.

🎯 Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive experience in defense, national security, or related industries, with significant exposure to Japan’s market 🇯🇵.
• Fluent in Japanese language skills.
• Deep knowledge of Japan’s defense procurement landscape, stakeholder ecosystem, and partners.
• Proven executive presence—ability to engage C-level leaders, senior civil servants, and prime contractors 👔.
• Experience leading teams and navigating matrix organizations with strong commercial acumen.

• Advanced degree in business, engineering, international relations, or a related field 📚.

• Existing network within JMOD, SDF, defense primes, and key integrators.

Benefits and salary ranges are location-specific, with US ranges starting from $109,200 up to $223,400 annually, with potential bonuses and equity.
