Job Description

The Director will be responsible for developing executive partnerships across Japan’s Ministry of Defense and related agencies, collaborating with ecosystem partners, and driving strategic initiatives to bolster defense capabilities. The role reports to the global defense leadership and works in close coordination with Japan’s country leadership, as well as product, engineering, legal, security, and delivery teams.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Define and implement Japan defense growth strategies aligned with global objectives and market dynamics.
  • Market Engagement: Identify priority missions, agencies, and modernization programs, creating resonant value propositions emphasizing resilience, sovereignty, and security.
  • Relationship Management: Build and sustain senior relationships with the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD), Self-Defense Forces, government entities, and defense primes.
  • Solution Design: Collaborate with architects and delivery leaders to craft secure, compliant solutions, including cloud, data platforms, AI/analytics, and cybersecurity.
  • Proposal & Delivery: Ensure proposals and plans meet mission needs, data sovereignty requirements, and accreditation pathways.
  • Executive Engagement: Lead high-level presentations and negotiations with stakeholders.
  • Strategic Alliances: Build partnerships with Japanese defense primes, systems integrators, and technology providers to support compliant bidding and delivery.
  • Team & Contracting: Structure teaming and subcontracting strategies respecting procurement and security constraints.
  • Coordination: Work closely with legal, security, and compliance teams to guide bid decisions, due diligence, and contracts.
  • Global Collaboration: Influence cross-functional teams worldwide to prioritize Japan-specific defense requirements and timelines.

Qualifications

  • Over 10 years of progressive experience in defense, national security, government, or related industries, with a strong focus on Japan market.
  • Proficiency in Japanese language.
  • Deep understanding of Japan’s defense procurement processes, stakeholder landscape, and partner ecosystem.
  • Exceptional executive presence, capable of engaging C-level leaders, senior civil servants, and prime contractors.
  • Proven success in leading teams and influencing matrix organizations, with strong commercial and contractual skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees in business, engineering, international relations, or related fields.
  • Experience with secure cloud solutions, mission systems modernization, cybersecurity, data/AI, or enterprise platforms within defense contexts.
  • Established network across JMOD, SDF, defense primes, and key systems integrators.

Salary & Benefits

US Hiring Range: $109,200 - $223,400 annually, with potential bonuses and equity. Salaries reflect experience, skills, market conditions, and location.
