The Director for Global Defense - Japan role is a strategic leadership position focused on expanding defense and national security business in Japan, aligning with global defense priorities while navigating local regulations and security requirements.
Job Description
As the Director, you will develop key relationships with Japan’s Ministry of Defense and various agencies, shape long-term capture strategies, and ensure secure delivery of mission-critical outcomes. This role reports to global defense leadership and collaborates closely with Japan’s local leadership, product/engineering, legal, security, and delivery teams.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Define and implement Japan defense growth strategies aligned with global objectives and local market dynamics.
- Identify priority missions, agencies, and modernization programs, establishing compelling value propositions that highlight resilience, sovereignty, and security.
- Build and maintain senior relationships with the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD), Self-Defense Forces, government entities, and defense primes.
- Partner with solution architects and delivery leaders to design secure and compliant solutions (cloud, data platforms, AI/analytics, cyber).
- Ensure proposals and delivery plans meet customer mission needs, respect local data residency/sovereignty expectations, and follow accreditation pathways.
- Lead executive-level presentations and negotiations with clients.
- Build strategic alliances with defense primes, systems integrators, and technology partners for compliant bids and delivery.
- Structure teaming and subcontracting approaches that satisfy procurement and security constraints.
- Coordinate with legal, security, and compliance teams on bid decisions, due diligence, and contracts.
- Influence global cross-functional teams to prioritize Japan defense requirements and timelines.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive experience in defense, national security government, or defense industry roles, with significant exposure to the Japan market.
- Working proficiency in Japanese.
- Deep understanding of Japan’s defense procurement processes, stakeholder landscape, and partner ecosystem.
- Executive presence with the ability to engage C-level leaders, flag officers, senior civil servants, and primes.
- Proven success leading teams, influencing matrixed organizations, and possessing strong commercial and contractual acumen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in business, engineering, international relations, or related fields.
- Experience with secure cloud, mission systems modernization, cyber, data/AI, or enterprise platforms in defense settings.
- Existing network within JMOD/SDF, defense primes, and key systems integrators.
