Job Overview

The Director for Global Defense - Japan is tasked with spearheading the growth of our defense and national security business in Japan. This role involves aligning global defense priorities with Japan's unique regulatory and security landscape. You'll develop key relationships with government agencies, shape long-term capture strategies, and ensure the secure delivery of mission success. Reporting to global defense leadership, you'll collaborate closely with Japan's country leadership, product/engineering, legal, security, and delivery teams.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Growth: Define and execute Japan's defense growth strategy aligned with global objectives and market dynamics.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Identify priority missions, agencies, and modernization programs; craft compelling value propositions emphasizing resilience, sovereignty, and security.
  • Relationship Building: Build and maintain senior relationships with the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD), Self-Defense Forces, government entities, and defense primes.
  • Solution Design & Compliance: Partner with solution architects and delivery teams to create secure, compliant solutions (cloud, data platforms, AI/analytics, cyber).
  • Proposal & Delivery Optimization: Ensure proposals and plans meet customer needs, data residency requirements, and accreditation pathways.
  • Executive Engagement: Lead high-level presentations and negotiations.
  • Strategic Alliances: Foster partnerships with Japanese defense primes, systems integrators, and tech collaborators for compliant bids and delivery.
  • Procurement & Security: Structure teaming and subcontracting to satisfy procurement and security standards.
  • Legal & Compliance: Collaborate with legal, security, and compliance teams on bid decisions and contracts.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Prioritize Japan defense requirements across global teams, aligning timelines and objectives.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 10+ years in defense, national security, government, or defense industry roles with substantial Japan market exposure.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in Japanese.
  • Market Knowledge: Deep understanding of Japan's defense procurement processes and stakeholder ecosystem.
  • Leadership & Presence: Ability to engage C-level leaders, senior civil servants, and prime contractors with confidence.
  • Team & Influence: Proven success leading teams and managing matrix organizations; strong commercial acumen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, engineering, international relations, or related fields.
  • Experience with secure cloud, mission system modernization, cyber, AI/data, or enterprise defense platforms.
  • Established network within JMOD/SDF, defense primes, and key system integrators.

Location & Salary: USD 109,200 – 223,400 annually, with bonus and equity eligibility. Specific ranges vary based on experience, skills, market conditions, and location.
