About the Role

The Director for Global Defense - Japan is responsible for steering and expanding our defense and national security business in Japan. This role focuses on aligning strategies with global defense priorities, navigating Japan’s regulatory and procurement environments, and cultivating executive relationships with key government agencies and industry partners. Reporting to the global defense leadership, the role collaborates closely with Japan’s country leadership, product/engineering, legal, security, and delivery teams.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Define and implement Japan’s defense growth strategy aligned with global objectives and market dynamics.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Identify priority missions, agencies, modernization programs, and develop compelling value propositions focused on resilience, sovereignty, and security.
  • Relationship Building: Maintain senior relationships with Japan’s Ministry of Defense (JMOD), Self-Defense Forces, government entities, and defense primes.
  • Solution Design: Collaborate with architects and delivery teams to create secure, compliant solutions (e.g., cloud, AI, cyber).
  • Proposal & Delivery: Ensure proposals and plans meet customer needs, data sovereignty expectations, and regulatory pathways.
  • Executive Communication: Lead high-level presentations and negotiations.
  • Partnerships & Alliances: Cultivate strategic relationships with defense primes, system integrators, and technology partners.
  • Team & Contracting Strategy: Structure teaming, subcontracting, and procurement approaches that meet security and compliance standards.
  • Cross-functional Coordination: Work closely with legal, security, and compliance teams for bid decisions and contracts.
  • Global Influence: Advocate for Japan defense requirements across international teams to align priorities.

Qualifications

  • Over 10+ years of experience in defense, national security government, or industry roles, with significant exposure to the Japanese market.
  • Working proficiency in Japanese language.
  • Deep understanding of Japan’s defense procurement processes, stakeholder landscape, and ecosystems.
  • Strong executive presence capable of engagingC-level leaders, senior civil servants, and prime contractors.
  • Proven success leading teams and influencing complex organizations with a keen commercial and contractual acumen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, engineering, international relations, or related fields.
  • Experience with secure cloud, mission modernization, cyber, data/AI, or enterprise platforms in defense environments.
  • Existing network within JMOD/SDF, defense primes, and key system integrators.
