Exciting Opportunity: Director of Communications for Leagues Cup 🏆
The Director of Communications for Leagues Cup is a fully bilingual media relations expert (English & Spanish) responsible for generating media coverage, managing media operations, and coordinating internal and external communications to elevate the tournament's profile across North America and internationally.
Role Overview
This pivotal role involves developing and executing communications strategies, working closely with MLS and LIGA MX teams, participating clubs, and media partners to ensure seamless media operations and impactful publicity for Leagues Cup. The position is based in vibrant New York City.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and marketing teams to craft the comprehensive communications strategy for Leagues Cup.
- Coordinate the implementation of the communication plan and ensure alignment across all channels.
- Lead in developing feature ideas, crafting compelling messages, and securing media placements to boost awareness.
- Proactively pitch media outlets to generate coverage, working with MLS, LIGA MX, and participating clubs.
- Oversee all announcement processes, including press releases, partner coordination, and story distribution related to event, sporting, and corporate news.
- Manage media operations planning, including media regulations, on-site execution, and staffing during the tournament.
- Serve as the main point of contact for all media and broadcast inquiries about Leagues Cup.
- Handle media requests from Canada, Mexico, the U.S., international outlets, and internal teams.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in departmental meetings and events as needed
- Maintain ongoing communication with MLS, LIGA MX, and participating clubs on media-related issues
- Coordinate with internal departments and event partners to ensure smooth information flow
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, marketing communications, or a related field (preferred)
- Experience: 8+ years, ideally in the PR or sports communications industry
Required Skills & Attributes
- Fully bilingual: Fluent in English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking) 🌐
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proactive and detail-oriented: Able to juggle multiple projects, anticipate issues, and meet deadlines
- Decision-making: Capable of making quick, sound judgments in fast-paced media environments
- Team player: Able to lead, influence, and collaborate cross-functionally
- Social media expertise: Knowledge of trends, platforms, and leveraging social channels for PR
- Self-starter: Meticulous, motivated, and able to work independently
- Travel & Hours: Willing to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed ✈️🕒

- Previous experience in sports communications is a plus
