Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Interpreter Services Manager, the Court Interpreter (Cantonese), Intermittent Part-Time, performs a variety of language interpretation activities for court proceedings, court personnel, parties, and the public. This position offers flexibility to be assigned across multiple court locations, including Alameda, Berkeley, Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, Dublin, and San Leandro.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpretation: Translate and interpret from and into English and Cantonese, using simultaneous and consecutive modes during court proceedings and related activities.
• Sight Translations: Produce sight translations of legal documents such as court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statements, and other relevant materials.
• Legal Support: Provide interpretation for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court departments, ensuring clear communication.
• Language Facilitation: Facilitate smooth communication between Cantonese and English speakers in various court situations.
• Performance Monitoring: Alert the court to any issues that might hinder interpretation accuracy or effectiveness.
• Legal and Court Knowledge: Research and familiarize oneself with legal terminology and court procedures.
• Administrative Duties: Receive and complete daily calendar assignments from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator or Supervisor with accuracy.
