The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, invites qualified Court Interpreters certified by the State of California to apply for full-time positions. This vital role involves providing interpretation services in a dynamic courtroom environment, ensuring non-English speakers receive fair and effective communication.
🌐 Definition & Role Overview
As a Court Interpreter, you will deliver essential public service by assisting non-English speaking parties in court proceedings. You will perform a variety of interpretation activities, including verbal interpretation of courtroom questions, testimony, and legal documents, as well as sight translations. This work supports the judicial process by facilitating clear communication among judges, attorneys, litigants, and the public.
Under supervision, interpreters provide:
- Verbal interpretation of courtroom proceedings
- Sight translation of legal documents
- Interpretation to and from English and non-English languages
📝 Typical Tasks & Responsibilities
- Interpret from and into English and other languages during court proceedings and related activities.
- Perform sight translations of official documents such as court petitions, reports, and legal forms.
- Assist judges, attorneys, court staff, and other departments as directed.
- Ensure accuracy by bringing any potential hindrances to the court’s attention.
- Research and understand legal terminology relevant to court proceedings.
- Manage daily assignments efficiently, recording activities as required.
🎯 Employment Standards & Qualifications
Must Have:
- Certification: Valid Court Interpreter certification issued by the Judicial Council of California or registration as a Court Interpreter.
- Driver’s License: Valid California Class “C” driver’s license or alternative transportation method.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Understanding of interpreter ethics and professional standards as per California Rules of Court, Rule 984.4.
- Proficiency in grammar and language usage.
- Ability to focus in a fast-paced, busy environment, adjusting to diverse speakers and accents.
- Professional interaction with court personnel and the public.
- Competency in using office equipment including computers, telephones, and copiers.
- Willingness to travel within Santa Clara County.

- Certified or Registered Court Interpreter by the Judicial Council of California.
