Definition
Under general supervision, the interpreter performs a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for Placer Superior Court. These activities include assisting parties such as witnesses, defendants, attorneys, court personnel, and the public.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a single-level classification. Employees are responsible for:
- Consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings
- Public service interactions between staff and the public
- Sight translation (reading written texts aloud)
Judgment and Responsibility
Interpreters are subject matter experts, performing duties at the journey level, often exercising independent judgment. They report to a Unit Manager and receive assignments from the Interpreter Coordinator or Unit Manager. 🧠💼
Essential Functions
- Interpretation: Conducts simultaneous and consecutive interpretation between English and applicable non-English languages at court proceedings and related departments.
- Sight Translations: Reads and orally translates documents such as court petitions, reports, waivers, and disposition statements.
- Client Interaction: Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, the public, and other court-connected organizations.
- Issue Reporting: Notifies the court of any issues that may impede performance.
- Terminology Research: Understands legal, technological, scientific, and medical terminology relevant to court proceedings.
- Daily Documentation: Manages daily calendar assignments and activity logs.
- Additional Duties: Facilitates communication of general court information with non-English speakers and may work at various court locations.
Knowledge of:
- English and applicable non-English language grammar and vocabulary
- Legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages
- Regional and dialectical variations within languages
- Interpreter ethics and standards as per California Rules of Court
Abilities to:
- Communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
- Interpret accurately in simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes
- Follow policies, procedures, and instructions diligently
- Establish and maintain professional relationships
- Maintain confidentiality of court documents and records
- Interact professionally and cooperatively
- Adhere to California statutes, Rules of Court, and court policies
- Remain impartial and conduct ongoing terminology research
- Operate office equipment including computers, telephones, and copiers
- Use court-provided transmitter and receiver equipment
Minimum Qualifications

Working Conditions
This role is primarily performed indoors in an office or court setting, with environmental controls. Travel to various court locations within Placer County and possibly other parts of California may be required. The environment may involve moderate noise levels, and employees might encounter emotionally charged situations or disturbing evidence. Overtime may be occasionally necessary. 🚶♂️🚶♀️
