Compensation
- Hourly Rates:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide language interpretation for the courtroom and related legal proceedings.
- Interpret simultaneously and consecutively for judges, attorneys, witnesses, defendants, plaintiffs, and court staff.
- Translate and interpret administration of oaths, documents, and written evidence, including technical, legal, and medical texts.
- Explain court procedures to non-English speaking persons in court settings.
- Interpret at counters and other court-related interactions as needed.
- Report any issues affecting interpretation accuracy or performance to the court.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification involves courtroom and legal proceedings interpretation duties. Only individuals certified as Court Interpreters in California are eligible.
Minimum Qualifications
Judgment & Responsibilities
Operate under general direction, responsible for accurately interpreting and explaining court policies and procedures. Must pay close attention to detail and adapt to procedural changes. Errors could impact court outcomes, including mistrials or legal consequences.
Employment Standards
- Valid California Court Interpreter certification
- Valid Class C California Driver’s License
- Knowledge of legal terminology, courtroom procedures, and interpreting ethics
- Fluent speaking, reading, and writing skills in English and Punjabi
- Ability to translate accurately and impartially in high-pressure environments
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with court personnel
- Proficiency in using office equipment and interpreting technology
- Understanding of California Rules of Court and adherence to interpreter ethics
