Position Overview

The Superior Court is seeking applications for the position of Court Interpreter (Cantonese), Intermittent Part-Time. Under the supervision of the Interpreter Services Manager, this role plays an essential part in supporting LEP (Limited English Proficiency) parties, court personnel, and the public by providing professional interpretation services. The position may be assigned to various court locations including Alameda, Berkeley, Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, Dublin, and San Leandro.

Examples of Duties 🚧

  • Interpret from and into English and Cantonese using simultaneous and consecutive modes during court proceedings and related activities.
  • Make sight translations of court documents such as petitions, reports, waivers, and felony disposition statements.
  • Provide interpretation support for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other officials as directed.
  • Interpret between languages during court proceedings, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Alert the court to any issues that may impair interpretation quality or performance.
  • Research and understand legal terminology pertinent to court functions.
  • Manage daily calendar assignments and accurately complete related logs or documentation.
  • Assist with general court information at the public information counter and handle interpretation-related document processing.
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

Note: Employees may perform other duties at an equivalent level, and not all duties are necessarily performed by each individual.

Minimum Qualifications 📝

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be in compliance with the employment eligibility provisions outlined in Government Code Section 71802.
  • Hold a valid Certified Court Interpreter certificate issued by the Judicial Council of California or be registered as a Court Interpreter by the Judicial Council.
  • Possess a valid California Class "C" driver’s license or have an alternative transportation method for job-related duties.
  • Clear a fingerprint background check and provide appropriate identification documents to verify eligibility to work in the U.S.

Hiring Process 📝

  3. Conduct of a final oral interview, which may include situational exercises and will constitute 100% of the final score.
