SF New Deal is looking for a culturally competent language professional to support our community initiatives through interpretation, translation, and proofreading services. This flexible, project-based position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Team: Partner Success

Type: Contractor (1099)

Estimated Weekly Hours: 5–15 hours per month (Assignment-based)

Preferred Availability: Flexibility between Monday–Friday, 9AM–5PM, as project needs arise

Compensation: $30–35/hour, depending on relevant experience

🌐 Role Summary

We seek a skilled Arabic interpreter, translator, and proofreader to support small businesses and community partners through remote and in-person services. The ideal candidate will bring linguistic proficiency and cultural insight, particularly within the Yemeni community, to facilitate inclusive and accessible interactions for SF New Deal projects.

🔍 Scope of Work

Interpretation

• Provide real-time interpretation between English and Arabic during meetings, visits, or events engaging small business or community partners.
• Assist with interpretation during presentations or demonstrations led by SF New Deal staff, as needed.
• Travel to partner locations across San Francisco for in-person interpretation (with prior agreement).

Translation & Proofreading

• Translate and proofread written materials—like program documents, outreach content, and forms—from English into Arabic, maintaining tone, accuracy, and formatting.
• Utilize dictionaries, reference tools, or translation software to ensure high-quality, consistent language.
• Collaborate with staff to incorporate feedback and finalize content.

🤝 Collaboration & Communication

• Coordinate with the Partner Success team’s Cultural Services Lead on project scope and deadlines.
• Maintain clear communication with SF New Deal staff via email, messaging tools, or collaborative platforms.
• Provide culturally responsive insights to enhance community interactions based on language and cultural context.

🎯 Key Qualifications

• Fluent and literate in both English and Arabic (preferably Yemeni dialect).
• Strong technical and conversational vocabulary in both languages.
• Previous experience in interpretation and translation, especially within community, nonprofit, or small business contexts.
• Based in or near San Francisco with the ability to travel locally as needed.
• Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Proficient with workplace tools such as Google Workspace and Slack.
• Knowledge of challenges faced by small businesses in under-resourced communities.
• Experience working in diverse cultural and linguistic environments.

⚖️ Contractor Status & Terms

• This is a 1099 independent contractor role.

• Submit invoices regularly for services performed, with payment following SF New Deal’s schedule.
• Assignments and hours will vary according to project needs. This is a temporary, project-based position, not a staff role.
