Introduction
The City of Racine is committed to reducing the digital divide by offering training to individuals with little to no experience using computers and the internet. Our goal is to ensure all residents can utilize digital tools for important tasks like homework, research, job applications, online forms, and telehealth services.
This role involves outreach into the community, collaboration with non-profit organizations, and bilingual training to assist Spanish speakers and those with limited English skills in gaining digital literacy. This work supports the city's vision of becoming a Smart City—improving lives and fostering economic growth through technology.
Position Purpose
Under the guidance of the Chief Information Officer, you will help teach basic computer skills to Spanish speakers and individuals with limited English. You will also contribute to planning, implementing, and sustaining the program, as well as increasing community engagement through in-person training sessions.
Expected Student Outcomes
- Gain hands-on experience teaching digital literacy skills, especially to Spanish-speaking, vulnerable, or underserved populations.
- Develop research, planning, and implementation skills for community programs.
- Enhance community engagement and training capabilities.
- Acquire experience working within local government and making a community impact.
- Network with field professionals and boost confidence for future careers or internships.
Preference will be given to interns interested in multiple semesters for continuity and those available to work at least 15-20 hours per week.
Essential Duties
- Learn effective, kind, and approachable methods to teach computer skills, especially to Spanish-speaking, vulnerable, or underserved groups.
- Assist individuals ranging from complete beginners to those with some digital literacy skills.
- Organize, schedule, and lead training meetings and events.
- Take notes on training activities and progress.
- Support the development of community outreach plans.
- Potentially train supporters, advocates, and partners to reach underserved populations.
- Collaborate with organizations and individuals to achieve common goals.
- Perform research and seek guidance on unfamiliar tasks.
- Perform other duties related to community engagement, Spanish language outreach, and training.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
Position involves sitting and typing at a computer terminal, with work conducted in office settings, remotely, or at community events, including outdoor venues under tents.

Other Experience and Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Fluent in English and Spanish (speaking, reading, writing)
- Intermediate computer literacy skills
- Experience in tutoring or training
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with vulnerable or underserved groups, including seniors
- Experience collaborating one-on-one and seeking understanding and consensus
- Ability to work with diverse backgrounds
- Experience developing projects from scratch
- History of working with communities or organizations to foster positive change
