💰 Salary and Location Info
- Announced for: Nassau County Departments, School Districts, Libraries, Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, Special Districts, Villages, and Nassau Health Care Corporation
- Salary Range:
- County: $30,185 - $58,098 (under current collective bargaining agreement)
- NHCC: $35,980 - $46,283
📝 Duties
Perform routine clerical duties, including:
- Using a keyboard for filing and data entry
- General clerical work and filing
- Performing related duties as required
🎓 Minimum Qualifications
Must be met on or before the application closing date:
- Graduation from high school, or
- Two years of satisfactory clerical experience, including typing
Note: According to Civil Service Law, section 54 effective September 4, 2024, applicants within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or educational requirements may take the exam but will be restricted from certification until requirements are met.

Applications can also be filed in person at 40 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Hempstead, NY, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Please note that no paper application forms are available, reflecting our goal of a paperless process.

- Suffolk County residents in Farmingdale UFSD No. 22 may participate but are only eligible for appointment within that district
- Special residence requirements for the Village of Freeport and Locust Valley Water District
💵 Application Fee
A non-refundable processing fee must be paid for each examination application via credit or debit card. Ensure qualification before submitting.
Fee Waiver: Available if you are unemployed, supporting a household, receiving Medicaid, SSI, public assistance, or eligible through social services programs. Active-duty military and veterans are also exempt. Follow instructions to verify eligibility and submit required documentation.
📝 Special Test Accommodations
If you require accommodations due to a disability, or need an alternative test date due to religious or military commitments, please indicate “yes” in your application and follow the provided procedures.
🔎 Examination Details
The exam includes a written test assessing:
- Spelling: Ability to spell words used in business communication
- Alphabetizing: Filing materials in alphabetical order
- Record Keeping: Tasks such as data organization, scheduling, and calculations with totals, subtotals, and averages
- Clerical Operations with Letters and Numbers: Comparing, checking, and counting grouped data
Note:
- A calculator (solar or battery powered) is recommended; devices with typewriter keyboards and similar tools are prohibited
- A written guide for the test can be found on the New York State Department of Civil Service website
- Typing proficiency will be assessed during probation; candidates must demonstrate acceptable skills to retain employment
