GOVERNORS SCHOOL Is Hiring A Board Substitute Teacher

Job Opportunity: Long-Term Board Substitute Teacher – Japanese Language 🌸

Join Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies as a Long-Term Board Substitute Teacher in Japanese Language, teaching two sections three days per week during Fall 2026. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a regional magnet program for gifted high school students.

Position Details 🗓️

Start Date: August 24, 2026
End Date: October 20, 2026 (end of Quarter 1, 2026-27 academic year)
Lesson plans will be provided to support your instruction.

The daily class rate is aligned with the first year of experience of the degree status on the teacher scale.

Key Responsibilities 📝

  • Deliver Instruction: Teach Japanese language content following curriculum guidelines and engaging learning activities.
  • Curriculum Development: Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with school philosophy and SOL standards; tailor instruction for individual and small groups of students.
  • Assess Progress: Evaluate students' academic and social growth, maintaining accurate records such as attendance, checklists, and reports.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a safe and organized environment conducive to learning.
  • Support Student Needs: Identify student challenges and collaborate with staff to support learning, health, and social development.
  • Communication: Keep parents and counselors informed about student progress.
  • Testing: Administer assessments according to school practices.
  • Inclusive Practices: Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements 🎓

Educational Background & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Preference for candidates with an appropriate Virginia Teaching License in the subject area.
  • Familiarity with Japanese language instruction and principles of effective teaching.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.

Certifications & Licenses ✅

  • Ideally fully licensed as a teacher, where possible.

Physical & Work Environment 🌳

  • Primarily classroom-based, involving sitting and standing.
  • Occasional exertion up to 10 pounds; movements such as stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
  • Frequent reaching, standing, walking, and grasping.
  • Continuous talking, listening, and visual tasks.
  • Work environment varies from quiet classroom to noisy cafeteria or assemblies.
  • Potential exposure to sunlight, environmental allergens, pests, solvents, pesticides, and other elements.
  • May be exposed to CRTs (cathode-ray tubes).

Salary will be prorated based on the number of days worked.
