Fairfax County Public Library is seeking a dedicated librarian to provide exceptional reference and outreach services, manage collections, and engage diverse communities through innovative programs and outreach initiatives.

Position Overview

  • Offer information services to patrons of all ages, including reference, programming, outreach, and inter-library loans.
  • Recommend reading materials, with special focus on youth services.
  • Manage library collections through weeding, replacements, input for collection development, and annual periodical selection.
  • Communicate library policies and procedures effectively to the public.
  • Support the goals of Fairfax County Public Library through various assigned duties.

Employment Details

  • This is a part-time, 20-hour per week position, may be job-shared.
  • The starting hourly rate ranges from $30.04 to $40.05, governed by Fairfax County personnel regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Answer reference and informational questions using print and electronic resources. 📖💻
  • Assist and instruct patrons in using print materials, online resources, and technology.
  • Help customers select books, periodicals, media, and other materials.
  • Plan and deliver programs and outreach initiatives for all ages.
  • Maintain collections through weeding, marketing, and merchandising efforts.
  • Troubleshoot library computers and report unresolved issues properly.
  • Perform copy cataloging and identify materials for collection addition.
  • Stay current with resources, services, and technologies in the information field.
  • Possibly serve as person in charge when needed.
  • Design and implement youth-focused programs and outreach activities. 🎉

Qualifications & Skills

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or ability to obtain one within three months.
  • Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians certification within three months of hire.
  • Experience front-line customer service at a public service desk in a library setting.
  • At least one year of experience with children's/youth collections and programming.
  • Proficient in computer operations, cataloging, shelving at all heights, and programs/information retrieval.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to promote library services effectively.
  • Knowledge of library principles, reference sources, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to interpret library policies for staff and the public.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to travel across Fairfax County for coverage, meetings, and training.
  • Background checks, including criminal and child protective services checks, will be required.

Preferred Experience & Attributes

  • Experience planning youth programs and outreach initiatives.
  • Ability to input, access, and retrieve data efficiently.
  • Comfortable shelving materials at various heights.
