About Life Story Club (LSC) 💬
Life Story Club is dedicated to reducing loneliness and social isolation among older adults by creating vibrant, virtual social clubs where participants can share their life stories and build lasting friendships. Research indicates that nearly 1 in 4 older adults experience chronic loneliness (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2020), which can lead to serious health risks such as depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and dementia.
Our small groups of 8–12 older adults meet weekly via Zoom or phone, sharing stories and fostering connections. Participants can record their stories for special events or our online archive, creating cherished memories for loved ones. We partner with community organizations like libraries, settlement houses, NORCs, and health providers to ensure accessibility across NYC and beyond.
Who We Seek 🎯
While all older adults are welcome, our main focus is on supporting those most at risk—individuals facing health challenges, recent losses, low income, or those from immigrant or LGBTQ+ communities. Our goal is to create inclusive, welcoming spaces where everyone feels they belong and no one is left alone.
Key Responsibilities 📝
- Lead virtual Life Story Club sessions in Cantonese or Mandarin when needed
- Facilitate one-hour, interactive story-sharing groups for seniors
- Assist participants in joining sessions, including those with accessibility needs
- Create a safe, welcoming environment that promotes openness and connection
- Use storytelling prompts to encourage sharing; occasionally share your own stories to build trust
- Write brief summary emails to the regular facilitator and program leaders after each session
Qualifications 🎓
- Fluency in Cantonese or Mandarin and English, with excellent communication skills
- Patience, compassion, and a strong commitment to enhancing the well-being of older adults
- Comfortable using Zoom with reliable internet and computer setup
- Background in social work, education, or experience working with seniors is a plus
