Bilingual Programming and Outreach Librarian

Job Overview

As a Bilingual Programming and Outreach Librarian, you will analyze, plan, develop, and execute bilingual programming, services, and outreach initiatives that assist families and children who speak languages other than English. Your role includes collaborating with educational institutions, governmental partners, community agencies, and library staff to promote inclusive, language-sensitive library services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Management: Plan, organize, and deliver programs to educational institutions, government agencies, and community organizations. 📅
  • Program Facilitation: Lead bilingual programming for staff, community agencies, and speakers of languages other than English within Sacramento County and the City of Sacramento. 🗣️
  • Outreach Activities: Conduct outreach to bilingual service organizations, ESOL providers, and language immersion programs, coordinating activities with staff. 🤝
  • Agency Liaison: Serve as the primary contact for bilingual service providers within the Sacramento Public Library area. 📞
  • Best Practices Development: Collaborate with library staff to develop strategies for serving non-English speakers and their families effectively. 🎯
  • Relationship Building: Foster partnerships with educational, governmental, and community organizations. 🌐
  • Challenges & Solutions: Identify service delivery challenges and recommend effective solutions. 💡
  • Resource Development: Coordinate the creation of bilingual bibliographies, webliographies, and media programming tailored to all ages. 📚💻
  • Promotion & Representation: Advocate for the Library within the community and represent it to external agencies. 🎤
  • Presentations & Reports: Develop and deliver formal and informal presentations; maintain reports, databases, and summaries. 📊
  • Staff Training: Prepare and deliver training sessions on bilingual programming and outreach strategies. 🏫
  • Travel & Miscellaneous Duties: Travel across Sacramento for outreach activities and perform additional duties as assigned. 🚗

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years as a Librarian or in working with English language learners in educational settings.
  • Education: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited university. Proficiency in at least one language other than English is preferred. 🎓🌎

Knowledge of:

  • Developmental, recreational, and educational needs of multilingual families and children.
  • Best practices for bilingual services, including standards from ALA, ALSC, YALSA, and other recognized organizations. 🏆
  • Community engagement and assessment techniques.
  • Sacramento’s educational and community organizations.
  • Proper language and English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Emerging trends in literacy and bilingual library services. 🚀

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences. 🗨️✍️
  • Represent Sacramento Public Library professionally and articulately. 🏢
  • Present information visually using tools like PowerPoint. 🎥
  • Design and deliver training sessions for diverse groups.

  • Interpret and apply library policies and procedures.
  • Produce accurate reports, documents, and data files.

  • Operate personal computers and related software programs.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Mobility: Ability to remain stationary for extended periods; occasional movement within the office to access materials.
  • Physical Lifting: Occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 10 pounds or more.
  • Perception: Ability to observe details closely, including color perception and reading tasks.
  • Communication: Frequent in-person and telephone communication; occasional public speaking.
  • Schedule: Occasional evening or weekend work, including on-call duties for emergencies. 🚨
