Texas Health Action (THA) is a community-informed non-profit organization committed to offering safe, supportive, and high-quality health services. Our Kind Clinic proudly operates across four vibrant locations: two in Austin, one in San Antonio, and another in Dallas, with virtual care options available statewide. Supported by Waterloo Counseling Center and a passionate team of over 250 dedicated employees and volunteers, THA champions healthcare equity and accessibility throughout Texas.
Position: Bilingual Patient Advocate (Spanish & English)
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated individual to help optimize the patient experience by guiding patients through complex healthcare systems, from insurance coverage to connecting with medical and social services. This role involves one-on-one patient interactions to help them understand their care options and access needed resources.
Core Functions
- Supports status-neutral engagement activities: Facilitates access to HIV biomedical interventions for prevention and care.
- Provides direct patient care: Conducts intake and assessments for HIV care, PrEP/PEP, gender-affirming care, and delivers individual and group interventions, including sexual health education and counseling.
- Navigates psychosocial barriers: Identifies challenges patients face in accessing care and links them to supportive services and programs.
- Monitors patient access & retention: Tracks issues affecting adherence and works to eliminate barriers, maintaining current knowledge of resources.
- Data collection & analysis: Tracks program progress and manages operations using quality improvement tools.
- Community & inter-agency liaison: Acts as a bridge with local agencies and interprets program guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Quality improvement & innovation: Assists in refining programs and helps establish policies and procedures for the clinic.
- Confidentiality & compliance: Maintains HIPAA standards, ensuring patient information privacy.
- Other duties: Performs related responsibilities as needed to support the clinic’s mission.
Compensation & Benefits 💰
This position is placed within the salary band of $21.70 to $24.30 per hour. Placement within this range will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Job Requirements
Education & Licensure 📚
- Bachelor's degree in social science or public health; or
- Two-year degree with relevant licensure, or
- Four years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within two days of hire.
Experience & Skills
- At least 1 year of direct experience with HIV counseling, testing, or case management.
- Knowledge of insurance navigation and appointment scheduling.
- 2+ years working with diverse populations, including LGBTQIA+ and communities of color.
- Experience in healthcare, social work, psychology, counseling, or public health preferred.
- Willingness to be trained in phlebotomy is a plus.
- Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
- Experience with trauma-informed approaches, substance use, harm reduction, homelessness, mental health, and LGBTQIA+ issues is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality per HIPAA standards.
- Diplomacy, tact, and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Cultural sensitivity and experience working with diverse groups.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; additional languages desirable.
- Effective time management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities.
- Capacity to work under pressure and manage stress.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners.
- Availability to work 40 hours weekly, including some evenings and weekends.
- Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

Physical & Environmental Requirements 💪

- Work mostly indoors with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
