Milton Hershey School (MHS), located in Hershey, PA, is dedicated to providing a top-tier, cost-free, career-focused education to over 2,200 students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Established in 1909 through the generosity of Milton and Catherine Hershey, the school continues to grow and impact lives, boasting over 12,000 graduates to date. We are currently seeking married couples to serve as Full-time Flex Houseparents, playing a vital role in nurturing the academic and personal growth of our students.
About the Role
As a Flex Houseparent, you will reside in on-campus student homes, providing care, guidance, supervision, and support to a group of approximately 8–13 students. Your efforts will help foster a structured, family-like environment that encourages students’ emotional, social, and academic development, empowering them to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervision & Mentorship: Provide daily guidance and support to students.
- Household Management: Maintain household routines and manage student schedules.
- Health & Safety: Administer medications and monitor student wellness.
- Transportation & Activities: Drive students to activities and plan engaging developmental and recreational events.
- Spiritual Leadership: Lead daily devotions and accompany students to Sunday Chapel services.
- Household Oversight: Manage budgets and household reports.
Work Schedule & Transition
Initially, Flex Houseparents support various student homes on a schedule of nine consecutive days on duty followed by three days off. During weekdays, there is flexibility while students are in school. Over time, they transition into a Placed Houseparent role, residing in and working with the same group of students in their dedicated home.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary: $44,768 per person (approximate total of $168,000 per couple), including free housing, meals during duty, utilities, and more.

Qualifications
- Experience working or volunteering with youth.
- Legally married couples for at least two years.
- Both spouses aged 27 or older.
- Maximum of three dependent children residing in the student home.
- Commitment to a smoke-free and weapon-free campus; no alcohol while on duty.
- Pet limitations: Only fish and one approved dog breed allowed.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to be certified to drive student vans.
- Comfort leading students in daily devotions and attending Judeo-Christian Sunday Chapel services (proselytizing prohibited).
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Demonstrated integrity and professionalism; serving as role models for students.
