The Role

Under general direction, the Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and casework services to individuals facing mental health and/or substance abuse issues. They assess patients' mental status through interviews and observations, then develop treatment plans or make referrals to suitable services.

What You Will Do

• 🤝 Work with patients and their families to determine treatment goals.
• 📝 Gather family information, observations, and concerns.
• 🎯 Conduct interviews, observations, and develop personalized treatment plans.
• 📋 Implement program goals, policies, and activities aligned with organizational objectives.
• 🧠 Conduct individual and group therapy sessions for patients with mental illness, emotional, or substance abuse problems.
• 🏡 Assess incoming clients and assist in preparing them for transitioning back home.
• 🔗 Provide referrals to appropriate mental health resources.
• 📈 Monitor and document patients' treatment progress and mental status.
• 🤝 Consult with other mental health professionals to ensure effective treatment courses.
• 🚨 Offer crisis intervention services for patients in danger to themselves or others.
• 🗂 Keep accurate records of patient information and treatments provided.
• 🌍 Utilize community mental health resources as needed.

Who You Will Be

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

• 🎓 Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling.
• 🩺 1-2 years of clinical experience in substance use and/or mental health treatment tailored to program needs.
• 🌆 In-depth knowledge of NYC's diverse network of medical and behavioral health organizations, including substance use disorder treatment, education, employment services, and community support groups.
• 💻 Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
• 🌎 Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• 🔒 Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

License/Certification Required

• ✅ To obtain QHP (Qualified Health Professional) status within OASAS-regulated programs, a MHC-Permit is required and must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
• ✅ Alternatively, NYS LMHC licensure for designated programs/divisions.
