MCASA, Maryland’s leading sexual assault coalition, is seeking a dedicated full-time bilingual legal advocate to provide impactful services to survivors and support professionals working in this vital field.

About Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) 🧡

MCASA unites Maryland’s rape crisis centers and organizations committed to ending sexual violence. Our mission is to prevent sexual assault, advocate for accessible and compassionate survivor care, and hold offenders accountable.

We believe self-care is essential to serving others effectively. Our staff are encouraged to practice self-care, maintain work-life balance, and enjoy flexible work arrangements, primarily virtual with some in-person duties.

Employees should be available to travel to our Silver Spring office within 90 minutes or live within Maryland. While many tasks can be performed remotely, some in-person activities include meetings, court proceedings, conferences, and community events. Employees may also work in-office depending on availability and protocols.

Position Overview 💼

The Sexual Assault Legal Institute (SALI), part of MCASA, is dedicated to ending sexual violence through legal services, technical assistance, and training. We are looking for a passionate Legal Advocate to join our team, providing legal support to survivors and assisting professionals through education.

This role reports to the Senior Legal Advocate and involves a mix of legal advocacy, community outreach, administrative tasks, and training.

Key Responsibilities & Duties ✍️

  • Provide culturally competent legal advocacy to survivors of sexual assault
  • Assist attorneys in representing survivors in cases such as protective orders, U-visas, family law, victim rights, education, and employment
  • Enhance SALI’s social media presence and update legal information on MCASA’s website
  • Develop outreach materials, coordinate translations, and participate in SALI forums and meetings
  • Conduct intake interviews and safety planning with survivors
  • Support the creation of training and technical assistance materials
  • Assist with agency communication efforts (listservs, social media, newsletters, calls)
  • Collect and report data for grants, assist in grant applications, and ensure program compliance
  • Maintain records using SALI’s Legal Server database
  • Participate in recruiting, training, and supervising legal interns
  • Prioritize tasks aligned with funding and grant requirements
  • Uphold professional ethics and standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership

Qualifications 🎓

  • Passion for ending sexual violence
  • Bachelor’s degree required; recent JDs considered if committed to outreach and administrative responsibilities
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual or power-based violence preferred
  • Strong communication skills in person, by phone, email, and in writing
  • Fluency in English; Spanish fluency required
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car for Maryland travel; occasional out-of-state travel (1-3 times/year)
  • Enthusiasm for utilizing technology and social media to share information
  • Background check required (per federal funding regulations)

Position Details 📝

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary: $49,000 – $52,000 annually (commensurate with experience, education, and skills)

Physical & Work Environment 🚶‍♀️

Employees should be able to sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 10 pounds occasionally. Reasonable accommodations are available for disabilities. The work environment is mostly moderate noise, with remote work encouraged. In-person meetings, court visits, and community engagements may also be required, primarily in Maryland.
