Job Description

The Bilingual Interpreters (Casual) are responsible for providing oral interpretation in one or more of the listed languages: English into Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Pashtu. They will collaborate with various stakeholders, including central office departments, offices, and schools, to improve communication with parents and the public during meetings, conferences, and workshops. This role is on a temporary, hourly basis, with no guaranteed minimum hours, reporting to the Language Access Manager. Candidates should possess a high level of interpretation knowledge and experience working with educational terminology.

Assignments will be at multiple locations, and interpreters must be able to travel independently to assignments (mileage included in hourly rate).

Duties and Responsibilities

• ✨ Provide professional interpretation services to ACPS, in both virtual and in-person settings. Candidates must be capable of fulfilling remote and on-site assignments to ensure language access for families and staff.
• 🎧 Utilize interpretation equipment to deliver simultaneous interpretation services.
• ✅ Maintain the highest quality of interpretation, ensuring communication is equivalent to the original English message.
• 🤝 Collaborate with the ACPS Language Access Manager, departments, offices, and schools to support effective communication.

Qualifications

• 🎓 Bachelor’s degree.
• Understanding of and sensitivity towards the culturally and linguistically diverse community within the school division.
• 🔥 Superior oral fluency in English and at least one target language, with excellent grammar skills.
• ✍️ Well-developed skills in spelling, punctuation, syntax, and pronunciation in both academic English and the target language.
• 🔄 Ability to interpret accurately between English and the target language without altering meaning, across various educational contexts.
• 📚 Recent experience with education-specific terminology and acronyms, including fields like English Learner Support and Special Education.
• 📜 Familiarity with laws, policies, programs, and procedures in K-12 education systems.
• 🧑‍💼 Demonstrate professional appearance and demeanor befitting Alexandria City Public Schools.
• 🗂️ Excellent organizational skills.
• 🌟 Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• 🧠 Knowledge of current research and best practices in interpretation.
• 🚗 Ability to travel to and from ACPS schools as required.

Note: All applicants must pass an assessment test prior to hiring recommendation.

Compensation & Clearances

• 💵 Hourly rate: $40/hour
