Overview

The Bilingual Interpreters (Casual) are responsible for providing oral interpretation in one or more of the specified languages: English into Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Pashtu. They will collaborate with stakeholders from central office departments, schools, and community offices to enhance communication with parents and the public during meetings, conferences, and workshops. These roles are temporary, hourly positions with no guaranteed minimum hours, reporting to the Language Access Manager.

A high proficiency in interpretation and familiarity with educational terminology are essential. The role may require travel to multiple locations, with mileage included in the hourly rate.

📝 Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide professional interpretation services to ACPS, both virtually and in-person. Candidates must be capable of fulfilling remote and on-site assignments to support language access.
• Utilize interpretation equipment to deliver high-quality simultaneous interpretation.
• Ensure interpretation services are of the highest quality and faithfully represent the original communication in English.
• Collaborate closely with the ACPS Language Access Manager, and coordinate with other departments, offices, and schools.

🎯 Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Strong understanding of the culturally and linguistically diverse community within the school division.
• Superior fluency in English and one target language, with excellent grammar skills.
• Proficient in spelling, punctuation, syntax, grammar, and pronunciation in both academic English and the target language.
• Ability to interpret accurately between English and the target language across various educational settings, without altering meaning or intent.
• Recent experience using education-specific terminology and acronyms, including fields like English Learner and Special Education.
• Familiarity with laws, policies, programs, and procedures pertinent to K-12 education systems.
• Professional appearance and demeanor aligned with representing Alexandria City Public Schools.
• Excellent organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Knowledge of current research and practices in interpretation.
• Ability to travel independently to assignments; mileage supported in hourly rate.
• All applicants must pass an assessment test prior to recommendation for hire.

💰 Compensation

Hourly rate of $40 per hour.
