Job Description

The Bilingual interpreters (casual) are responsible for offering oral interpretation services in one or more of the following languages: English into Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Pashtu. You will collaborate with various stakeholders, including central office departments, schools, and community offices, to improve communication with parents and the public during meetings, conferences, and workshops. This is a temporary, hourly position with no guaranteed minimum hours, reporting to the Language Access Manager. A strong background in interpretation and familiarity with educational terminology are essential.

Assignments will be at multiple locations, and interpreters must be able to travel independently — mileage is included in the hourly rate. 🚗

Assignments & Responsibilities

• Provide professional interpretation services in both virtual and in-person settings to facilitate effective communication in schools and offices.
• Utilize interpretation equipment to deliver simultaneous interpretation services.
• Maintain the highest quality of interpretation, ensuring communication is equivalent to that in English.
• Collaborate effectively with the ACPS Language Access Manager, as well as other departments, offices, and schools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Understanding of the culturally and linguistically diverse community within the school division
• Superior oral fluency in English and one target language, with excellent grammar skills
• Strong skills in spelling, punctuation, syntax, grammar, and pronunciation of both academic English and the target language
• Ability to interpret accurately in various educational settings without altering meaning or intent
• Recent experience working with education-specific terminology and acronyms, including fields like English Learner and Special Education
• Familiarity with laws, policies, programs, and procedures in K-12 education
• Present a professional appearance and demeanor as representatives of Alexandria City Public Schools
• Excellent organizational skills
• Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
• Knowledge of latest research and best practices in interpretation
• Willingness to travel to and from ACPS schools as needed
• Pass the assessment test prior to recommendation for hire

Compensation

Hourly rate of $40 per hour. 💰

• TB Skin Test
• Public Health Compliance: Must adhere to safety and health protocols.
