Position Overview
The Housing Specialist is responsible for supporting shelter residents in securing stable housing via comprehensive assessments, personalized planning, and placement services. This role involves navigating NYC's housing voucher systems, coordinating housing searches, and fostering strong relationships with landlords and housing providers. Collaboration with case managers, DHS staff, and community organizations ensures timely, compliant placements.
Compensation & Benefits 💼
- Estimated Starting Salary Range: $26 hourly
- Pay: Commensurate with experience

Responsibilities
- Partner with shelter guests to assess housing needs, goals, and program/voucher eligibility.
- Develop individualized service plans with clear SMART goals.
- Provide ongoing support through regular meetings, updating plans as needed, to help clients achieve goals.
- Identify suitable permanent housing options tailored to clients’ needs and eligibility.
- Assist clients with rental applications, move-out planning, and overcoming barriers like past evictions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with landlords, brokers, and management companies.
- Identify safe, compliant apartments that meet NYC health and safety standards; accompany clients to viewings.
- Support lease negotiations and secure funding sources for housing.
- Conduct inspections to ensure housing upholds dignity, safety, and Fair Housing laws.
- Facilitate housing workshops to educate and empower clients.
- Maintain accurate records of clients’ housing progress.
- Promote inclusive practices for vulnerable populations such as women and individuals with disabilities.
- Educate clients on tenant rights and responsibilities pre-move.
- Advocate for equitable housing access, especially for marginalized and displaced groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- High School diploma required; college degree preferred.
- Fluent in Spanish.
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in housing placement or case management.
- Strong working knowledge of CityFHEPS, FHEPS, Section 8, and SOTA voucher programs.
- Knowledge of landlord-tenant law and fair housing regulations.
- Proficiency with NYC housing systems such as CARES, ACCESS HRA, and Housing Connect.
- Experience navigating DHS regulatory requirements, HPD/NYCHA inspections, and landlord-tenant procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Cultural competency to work with diverse populations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management databases.
- Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
