Position: Family Support Specialist

The Family Support Specialist provides culturally informed early childhood home visitation services based on the Parents as Teachers model. They partner with parents to strengthen relationships, improve parenting skills, and promote family self-sufficiency through in-home and group services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Office Presence: Attend in-office work as required.
  • Program Delivery: Incorporate essential program elements into family services.
  • Assessment & Screening: Use standardized tools as per organizational protocols.
  • Goal Setting: Partner with families to establish measurable short- and long-term goals based on their strengths.
  • Parent Skill Development: Design activities to teach early childhood growth, development, and health outcomes.
  • Parent-Child Interactions: Implement activities to improve engagement and learning between parents and children.
  • Family Resilience: Facilitate activities to enhance coping, problem-solving, and independence.
  • Resource Navigation: Guide families in accessing community resources like housing, financial management, education, and employment services.
  • Behavior Management: Educate parents on effective, non-abusive discipline techniques.
  • Advocacy & Liaison: Act as a bridge between families and service providers to meet family needs.
  • Parent Group Leadership: Lead parent groups when assigned.
  • Mandatory Reporting: Report all suspected abuse and neglect in compliance with Virginia laws.
  • Shadow Visits: Accompany new Family Support Specialists and community members during observational visits.
  • Community Outreach: Engage in efforts to raise awareness and increase caseloads.
  • Administrative Support: Assist with organizational duties as needed.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Documentation & Data Integrity

  • Maintain accurate data entry in family records and the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database.
  • Complete documentation promptly per agency standards.
  • Ensure timely reporting of program evaluation data.

Team & Community Engagement

  • Participate actively in team meetings and community committees.
  • Engage in organization-wide activities, including fundraising and outreach programs.

Professional Development

  • Attend relevant trainings and meetings to stay updated on best practices.
  • Work with your supervisor to identify and develop your professional growth plan.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s in Social Work, Early Childhood, Family Studies, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of parent-child interactions, child development, and effective parenting techniques is preferred.
  • Skills: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to be reflective and accurate in documentation.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication in English; fluency in Spanish is required.
  • Technical: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn Family Lifeline software.
  • Other: Valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and flexibility in work schedule are necessary.
