JCP Downtown Is Hiring An Assistant Director, Hebrew School Project

The Jewish Community Project (JCP) of Lower Manhattan, established in 2002, fosters a dynamic, non-denominational Jewish community in Tribeca, offering educational, cultural, social, and spiritual experiences to approximately 300 families and individuals. The organization also operates a renowned Early Childhood Center and Hebrew School, actively enriching Jewish life in downtown NYC.

Position: Assistant Director of the Hebrew School Project (HSP) 🎓

JCP is seeking a highly organized, proactive professional to oversee the daily operations of our vibrant Hebrew school community, serving over 250 learners aged 3.5 to 18. This role reports to the Director and is pivotal in supporting teaching staff, fostering an inclusive environment, and ensuring the seamless functioning of the school.

What You’ll Do 🛠️

  • Supervise Teaching Staff: Meet weekly with teachers, ensure curriculum alignment, conduct classroom observations, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Liaise with Families: Maintain strong communication, address questions, and support parents with curriculum, social, and behavioral concerns.
  • Program Management: Assist in coordinating events like model seders, Shabbat dinners, grade-specific activities, speakers, and field trips.
  • Thought Partnership: Collaborate with the Director to advance the vision of HSP, including developing Israel-related curriculum components.
  • Oversee Curriculum: Review and update curriculum annually and support weekly lesson planning.

  • Managing key responsibilities independently, especially in the Director’s absence.
  • Providing effective support and guidance to teaching teams.
  • Resolving classroom issues promptly and satisfactorily.
  • Developing and implementing initiatives for parent involvement and community engagement.
  • Receiving positive feedback from students, teachers, and families.

Requirements ✅

  • Experience: 3+ years managing and supervising teams, preferably in Jewish education or camp settings, working with children and parents from elementary to high school.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Google Suite, basic Hebrew, broad cross-denominational Jewish knowledge (texts, culture, customs, holidays, values).
  • Attributes: Attention to detail, proactive, flexible, open-minded, excellent interpersonal skills, allergy awareness.
  • Nice to Have: Background in child development, public speaking, Hebrew resource creation, Torah hands-on skills, first aid certification, CRM experience.

The Details 📝

  • Salary: $70,000 - $75,000 (commensurate with experience)
  • Benefits: Fully subsidized health insurance, vision, dental, retirement plan, disability coverage, FSA, transit benefits
  • Time Off: 2 weeks PTO, sick days, 10 US holidays (including the day after Thanksgiving), and Jewish holidays
  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 1pm–7pm in person at JCP, with remote mornings and Fridays; some weekend and holiday support required
